Nairobi National Park: The World's Only Urban Safari Destination

Nairobi National Park is truly one of Africa's great anomalies — a functioning national park just 7 kilometres from the heart of one of East Africa's busiest cities. Established in 1946, it was Kenya's very first national park. Covering 117 km², it's home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, black rhinos, hippos, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and over 400 species of birds. The surreal backdrop of Nairobi's gleaming skyscrapers against this wilderness makes for extraordinary photography.

What Wildlife Can You See?

Despite its small size by Kenyan standards, Nairobi National Park punches well above its weight for wildlife. It's one of Kenya's most reliable destinations for black rhino sightings (home to approximately 50 individuals). Lion prides roam the park consistently, and leopard sightings, though rarer, do occur. The Athi-Kapiti plains section attracts large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and kongoni. The park's southern boundary remains open, allowing wildlife to migrate seasonally — keeping the ecosystem surprisingly dynamic for its urban setting.

Planning Your Day Trip from Nairobi

Nairobi National Park is ideal for a half-day or full-day safari. Most visitors start early morning (7am–9am) when animals are most active and light is best for photography. The park is only a 20–30 minute drive from most Nairobi hotels, making it an easy addition to any Kenya itinerary — especially if you have a long layover or arrive/depart from JKIA. Adult entry fees are $43 USD for non-residents. A 3–4 hour guided game drive costs approximately $80–150 depending on vehicle type.

Combine Your Visit with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Located near the park's main gate, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust runs world-famous elephant nursery tours (open 11am–12pm daily). A morning visit to Nairobi National Park combined with the 11am elephant nursery tour makes for a remarkable and deeply moving half-day itinerary that no Kenya visitor should miss.

"Seeing lions with Nairobi's skyline behind them — it's genuinely unbelievable until you've experienced it yourself."
