Top 10 Kenya National Parks & Game Reserves to Visit in 2026

Kenya is home to some of the most diverse and spectacular wildlife habitats on Earth. With over 50 national parks and game reserves spread across savannah, forest, lake, and desert ecosystems, choosing where to go can feel overwhelming. This guide distils the very best — the ten parks every Kenya safari traveller should know about.

1. Maasai Mara National Reserve — The Crown Jewel

No list of Kenya's best national parks would be complete without the Maasai Mara. Covering 1,510 km² of open savanna in the Great Rift Valley, the Mara is Kenya's most famous wildlife destination. Its resident populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and buffalo make it exceptional year-round — but it's the annual Great Wildebeest Migration between July and October that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to witness one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth.

2. Amboseli National Park — Elephants & Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is perhaps Africa's most photogenic park. Set at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, it offers dramatic views of Africa's highest peak as a backdrop to some of the continent's largest free-roaming elephant herds. January and February offer the finest Kilimanjaro views. Amboseli also has excellent sightings of lion, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest. The dry season here is particularly spectacular — explore why in our Amboseli in the Dry Season guide.

3. Tsavo East & West — Kenya's Largest Safari Wilderness

Combined, Tsavo East and Tsavo West form Kenya's largest protected area — over 21,000 km² of diverse terrain. Tsavo East is known for its vast open plains, the Galana River, and iconic red-dusted elephants. Tsavo West is more rugged, featuring the Mzima Springs (where hippos and crocodiles share crystal-clear water), the Shetani lava flows, and the Chyulu Hills. Both parks are excellent and are often combined into a 3–4 day circuit.

4. Samburu National Reserve — Northern Frontier Wildlife

For something completely different from the classic southern circuit, Samburu National Reserve offers the 'Special Five' — reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx — species found nowhere else in Kenya. Set along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, Samburu is a rugged gem with far fewer tourists than the Mara. It's an essential addition to any Kenya safari itinerary for wildlife enthusiasts seeking the less-seen.

5. Lake Nakuru National Park — Flamingos & Rhino Sanctuary

Lake Nakuru is world-famous for the vast flocks of flamingos that turn its alkaline shores pink. Beyond birds, Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya's best parks for rhino sightings (both black and white) and is home to introduced Rothschild giraffes. It's perfectly positioned between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara, making it an ideal stopover on a multi-park itinerary.

6–10. More Parks Worth Exploring

Aberdare National Park offers cool forested highlands and unique tree lodges where wildlife comes to you at night. Mount Kenya National Park surrounds Africa's second-highest peak, combining wildlife with trekking. Hell's Gate National Park near Naivasha is Kenya's only park where you can walk or cycle among wildlife — perfect for budget travellers. Nairobi National Park, just 7km from the city centre, offers extraordinary day trips with big five potential. Finally, Meru National Park — where Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness — is a remote, rewarding gem for adventurous travellers.
