The Great Migration: When to Go and What to Expect
Every year, roughly 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, complete a circular journey across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. This relentless clockwise loop — driven purely by the search for fresh grass — is what we know as the Great Migration, and it is widely considered one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife events on the planet.
The Best Time to Visit
The Maasai Mara sees the herds between July and October, making this the peak season for witnessing the legendary Mara River crossings. As wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters in their thousands, the drama is unlike anything else in the natural world. July marks the arrival of the first herds, while August and September typically deliver the most intense and frequent crossings. By late October, the herds begin retreating south into Tanzania.
That said, the Mara is exceptional for big-cat sightings year-round. If your visit falls outside peak migration months, you can still expect outstanding game viewing — the resident lion prides, cheetah coalitions, and leopards are among Africa's most reliably sighted. The 'shoulder' months of June and November also offer lower crowds and more competitive pricing at camps and lodges.
Plan Around the Migration
Understanding Kenya's seasons is key to planning your migration safari. Our month-by-month guide breaks it all down.

Where you stay will define your experience. Camps positioned along the Mara River or inside the Mara Triangle tend to offer the most direct access to crossing points. Private conservancies bordering the reserve — such as Olare Motorogi and Naboisho — allow off-road driving, night drives, and walking safaris that are not permitted inside the main reserve. These conservancies also accommodate far fewer vehicles per sighting, dramatically improving both the viewing experience and your photography.
At Elabush Tours & Safaris, we plan every Mara itinerary with crossing proximity and exclusivity in mind. Our guides have deep knowledge of the riverbanks and communicate daily with fellow guides to position you at the right crossing at the right time. Whether you are after a tented luxury camp or a private fly-in safari, we will match you with the right property for the experience you want.
