Lake Nakuru: Kenya's Flamingo Capital & Rhino Sanctuary
Lake Nakuru in Kenya's Great Rift Valley has earned its place among the world's most iconic wildlife spectacles. At its peak, over a million lesser flamingos paint the lake's alkaline shores a vivid pink — a sight so extraordinary that David Attenborough described it as 'one of the greatest ornithological spectacles on Earth.' While water level fluctuations mean flamingo numbers vary year to year, Lake Nakuru remains a spectacular destination well worth including in any Kenya safari itinerary.
Beyond Flamingos: Big Four Wildlife
Lake Nakuru National Park is more than just flamingos. It's one of Kenya's premier destinations for rhino sightings — the park protects both black and white rhinos within its fenced sanctuary. Lion and leopard are resident and regularly sighted. Large herds of buffalo and zebra roam the open grasslands around the lake. Rothschild giraffes (one of Africa's most endangered subspecies) were successfully reintroduced to the park and thrive here. Great white pelicans, African fish eagles, and yellow-billed storks add to the extraordinary birding experience.
"Lake Nakuru is one of the few places in Africa where you can tick rhino, leopard, lion, buffalo, and a million flamingos in a single afternoon."
— Elabush Senior Guide
Best Time to Visit Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru can be visited year-round, making it a versatile addition to any Kenya itinerary. The dry season (June–October) offers excellent land wildlife viewing. Flamingos tend to be most numerous in the cooler months of November through February, when algae blooms in the lake's alkaline waters peak. The park sits at 1,754 metres above sea level, so it's noticeably cooler than parks like Amboseli and Tsavo — bring a warm layer for early morning game drives.

Lake Nakuru National Park is approximately 157 km northwest of Nairobi — roughly a 2.5–3 hour drive via the A104 highway. It's typically combined with a Naivasha stopover (for Hell's Gate cycling and boat safaris on the hippo-filled lake) or positioned between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara on a longer circuit. Accommodation ranges from budget campsites inside the park to comfortable lodges on the perimeter, including Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge and Lake Nakuru Lodge.
